How can I be a better steward?

In today’s environment we narrow the focus to nothing more than being more eco-friendly. We are taught from an early age that we must all do our part to make the world around us a better place. But stewardship is much more personal.

It’s about the proper management of the things that truly matter to you. It’s about relationships with self and others, as well as the management of time, energy and talents.

Time, energy and talents are currency.

alone on phoneMost of us have heard or used the expression “Pay Attention”. It is a simple command or request to invest your time and energy to focus on the here and now. Some might recognize that as mindfulness. Do you find yourself wondering where all the time goes?

You may also be familiar with the phrase “energy flows where attention goes”. Are you investing your energy on the regrets of the past or worrying about the future? For that matter are you even investing in the things that make you uniquely you (talents)?

Stewardship is about making wise investments.

It is important to invest time, energy and talents wisely. If we invest too much on the past or future we will have insufficient resources for the present. Present is synonymous with the word gift for a reason. When we choose to focus on the present and make the most of it, we start to tap into the things that matter.

This is why stewardship is so important! How are you spending your time, energy and talents?

Five tips to improve your stewardship.

  1. Keep a journal for one week to track your investments of time and energy.
  2. Set time limits on mindless activities such as binge watching shows or social media.
  3. Achieve a personal goal each day even if it is something mundane or trivial.
  4. Schedule time daily to reflect on the day and focus on selfcare
  5. Replace unhealthy habits and relationships that are not in your best interest.
Reflecting on how we spend our time and energy can help us to make better choices. Setting goals can help us achieve our dreams.
